Every phone sold by Used Mobiles 4 U goes through a structured refurbishment process before it is listed for sale. The aim is simple: verify the device, test the hardware, check the battery, securely remove previous user data, grade the cosmetic condition and confirm the phone is ready for everyday use.
This page explains the detailed process. For a shorter buyer-focused overview, see our Refurbished Phone Guide. For the condensed checklist, see our 10 Step Refurb Check.
1. Device identity and status check
We begin by checking the device identity and status before refurbishment work continues. This helps us identify handsets that should not proceed to resale.
Checks can include IMEI and network-status verification together with confirmation that the phone is suitable for further testing.
2. Visual inspection
The frame, rear housing, display, camera surrounds, charging port and buttons are inspected for damage, previous repair signs and general wear.
At this stage we look for issues such as cracks, impact damage, poor previous repairs, loose components or damage that could affect reliability.
3. Display and touch testing
We test the screen for touch response, brightness, colour consistency and visible defects. On OLED devices we also look for signs of image retention or display wear.
If a screen has been replaced previously, the important question is whether the display and touch performance meet our functional standards.
4. Camera and biometric checks
Front and rear cameras are checked for focus, image capture and video operation. Where supported, we also test biometric functions such as Face ID, Touch ID or fingerprint recognition.
5. Audio, buttons and sensors
We check speakers, microphones, vibration, physical buttons and relevant sensors. These are everyday functions that can be easy to overlook in a quick visual inspection but make a major difference to usability.
6. Charging and connectivity
The charging port is tested for reliable charging. We also check key connectivity functions such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mobile-network operation.
Where relevant, additional features such as wireless charging are also checked.
7. Battery health verification
Battery condition is checked as part of the refurbishment process because a heavily worn battery can make an otherwise good phone poor value.
Used Mobiles 4 U supplies eligible refurbished phones with at least 85% battery health. Eligible devices also include 12-month battery cover alongside the main device warranty.
8. Secure data wipe and factory reset
Previous user data is securely removed and the device is factory reset before resale. The phone is then prepared for a clean setup by the next owner.
9. Cosmetic grading
Once functionality has been confirmed, the phone is graded according to its cosmetic appearance. The grade describes visible wear rather than whether the phone works.
For a full explanation of our condition levels, see our refurbished phone grading guide.
10. Final quality check and preparation
Before the device is listed or dispatched, we complete a final check to confirm that the phone matches its description, grade and storage details and that the key functions tested earlier are still working correctly.
The device is then cleaned and prepared for resale.
What happens if a phone fails our checks?
A phone that does not meet our functional, battery or condition standards is not simply passed through for sale. Depending on the issue, it may be repaired and retested or removed from sale.
This is an important difference between buying from a professional refurbisher and buying a handset privately with little or no testing history.
