Used iPhone 15 Pro Max Camera Review

I have been using the iPhone 15 Pro Max for around five months, and this review is based purely on its performance as a camera. The focus here is on creativity, workflow, and day-to-day shooting rather than benchmarks, gaming ability, or refresh rates. The model I have been testing is the 512 GB version, and all images were taken using the native camera app. If you are considering a used iPhone 15 Pro Max, this review will help you understand exactly what to expect.

Why I upgraded

Although I was satisfied with the iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro Max appealed to me because of several key upgrades. The larger screen, the move to USB-C, and the introduction of the new 120 mm telephoto lens were the main factors that convinced me to switch. I travel frequently and usually carry both my iPad Pro and MacBook, so the promise of simpler file transfers through USB-C meant fewer accessories to pack and less hassle.

I was also intrigued by the ability to shoot in LOG mode, which seemed like it would make the device far more useful for vlogging. Most importantly, I was eager to try out the 120 mm (5x) lens, as it offers longer focal lengths that are ideal for tighter compositions. For anyone thinking about a used iPhone 15 Pro Max, these upgrades remain some of the strongest reasons to buy.

What’s good

The iPhone 15 Pro Max immediately feels lighter in the hand compared to earlier models, which makes it more comfortable to use for extended periods. Despite this, I would still recommend pairing it with a silicone or rubber case, especially when using it for photography, as it improves grip and reduces the risk of slips.

The screen is impressively bright, even in strong daylight, which makes composing shots much easier in outdoor conditions. Apple has also added the new Action Button, which makes it quick and convenient to open the camera, and as a result I found myself missing fewer photo opportunities. When picking up a used iPhone 15 Pro Max, you’ll find these refinements make everyday use more enjoyable.

The inclusion of USB-C is another welcome addition, as it opens the door to using compatible accessories, even though the overall experience still feels a little unpolished. In terms of image quality, the 24 mm main camera is excellent and delivers results that are comparable to those from the iPhone 14 Pro. The ultra-wide 12 mm lens performs well, and the new 120 mm telephoto lens truly transforms what is possible creatively. I found myself using the 120 mm lens far more often than I expected. Although the ultra-wide and telephoto lenses are not quite as sharp as the main sensor, they are still very capable and produce results that are more than good enough for most scenarios.

Video recording is one of the standout features of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Autofocus is sharp and responsive, colour rendering is pleasing, and there is plenty of flexibility for colour grading in post. Stabilisation is strong, combining both optical and digital methods across all of the lenses, which makes the footage consistently smooth and reliable. If you are searching for a used iPhone 15 Pro Max, you can expect this model to deliver some of the best video performance available on any smartphone.

What’s mixed

The introduction of LOG mode is very exciting for those who like to colour grade their footage and pull more detail from highlights and shadows. However, it does come with some compromises. LOG mode is only available when shooting in ProRes HQ, which results in very large file sizes. Even on the 512 GB version of the phone, I was only able to record for about 45 minutes in this format during heavy use.

While it is possible to use external drives or memory cards to get around the storage limits, this does make the setup bulkier, which somewhat defeats the appeal of carrying just one compact device. Anyone buying a used iPhone 15 Pro Max should keep this limitation in mind, particularly if their focus is on long-form video content.

Apple’s marketing gives the impression that there is a vast range of lens versatility, but in practice, some of the focal lengths are simulated by cropping. For example, the 2× (approximately 50 mm) option is not a true lens but simply a crop from the 24 mm main camera. Other simulated focal lengths include around 28 mm and 35 mm. The large 40 MP sensor helps these crops look better than you might expect, but the quality is still noticeably reduced, and the difference is not always subtle. For a used iPhone 15 Pro Max, this is not a deal breaker, but it is worth knowing how these features actually work.

Although Apple promotes the iPhone 15 Pro Max as being more durable, my own experience was not flawless. Despite being careful with the device, I ended up with a significant scratch on the screen, which shows that the improvements to durability are not foolproof. This is particularly important to remember if you are planning to buy a used iPhone 15 Pro Max, as cosmetic wear and tear may already exist.

What’s bad

Unfortunately, I did come across some frustrating issues while using the iPhone 15 Pro Max as a camera. The Action Button, while useful, is not entirely reliable. Roughly one in five times I tried to launch the camera with it, the app either froze or failed to respond. When recording video for extended periods, the phone also tended to heat up, slow down, and behave as though it were running out of memory. For short clips this was fine, but for longer or more demanding sessions the performance degraded noticeably. If you are considering a used iPhone 15 Pro Max, you should be aware of these performance quirks, especially if you intend to shoot a lot of video.

The USB-C experience also left me disappointed. External drives such as SSDs and CFExpress cards were not always recognised, and the Files app often crashed or failed midway through large transfers. The overall workflow for moving large files was clunky, especially when using an iPad. AirDrop worked well enough for a few clips at a time but struggled with larger batches. Copying files to external storage was unreliable, which made managing footage unnecessarily stressful. This remains true whether the phone is new or whether you are using a used iPhone 15 Pro Max .

Final thoughts

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is without question a very capable camera phone. It brings some genuinely impressive features, and the video performance in particular is excellent. For anyone who enjoys content creation or vlogging, it represents a strong choice. However, it is not without flaws, and the bugs, reliability issues, and limitations of certain advanced modes make it less than perfect. A used iPhone 15 Pro Max still delivers the same strengths and weaknesses, making it an outstanding option for those who want high-end performance without paying full price.

If you are buying it primarily for the camera, it is worth considering whether a mirrorless or compact camera might serve you better for dedicated photography, especially if you plan to shoot for long sessions or in controlled environments. That being said, the convenience of having great stills and video in one device cannot be understated, and for most people the iPhone 15 Pro Max strikes a very good balance. Choosing a used iPhone 15 Pro Max makes that balance even better, offering incredible performance at a lower cost.
